Obituary for Colonel Oscar Gibson Price, Jr., U.S. Army, Ret.

Colonel Oscar Gibson Price, Jr., United States Army, Retired, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 23, 1928, and passed away peacefully at his Marietta, Georgia, home on June 14, 2018. He was the only child of Oscar G. Price, Sr. and Daisy Dean Holland Price and grew up in Covington, LA.

Colonel Price graduated from Jefferson Military High School in Washington, Mississippi, where he later returned to teach math and history. Shortly after graduation in 1946 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He liked to say that the shooting war was over, but because the President had not yet rescinded the declarations of war, he was designated a World War II veteran eligible to wear the WWII Victory Medal. He spent two years in the Marine Corps before entering college on the GI Bill. While serving with a unit of the Louisiana Army National Guard he graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences from what is now Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. Later in his career, Oscar received a Master’s Degree in Human Resources from George Washington University and Master’s Degree in Military History from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

While at Southeastern, Oscar met his wife, Peggy Ann Wright Price, and they were married in December 1949. After graduation, Oscar began construction work and worked with his father in real estate. While doing construction work in Mississippi, he was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the Alabama National Guard and joined the active duty U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery in 1956. Oscar and his wife, Peggy, and their three children, Katherine, Thomas, and Scott lived at various military assignments in the United States, West Germany, Korea, and South Vietnam. He said that his most satisfying assignment was as the Commander of the 900-soldier 5th Battalion (Nike Hercules), 6th Air Defense Artillery in Germany where he had served earlier as a 1st Lieutenant. Colonel Price retired from the U.S. Army in March 1978, after 29 years of military service. His awards included two Legions of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, and three Army Commendation Medals along with various badges and service medals.

Following his military retirement, Oscar spent 10 years as the Director and Vice President of Human Resources for the Gwinnett County Hospital System in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Following his second retirement, Oscar and Peggy moved to Pell City, Alabama, where he set up his own tax accounting business while working as a volunteer with numerous civic organizations including the Rotary Club, Habitat for Humanity, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and St. Simon Peter Episcopal Church. One prominent Pell City citizen complimented Oscar for high moral character and his active involvement in his community and church. The Pell City Mayor praised Oscar and Peggy as great additions to Pell City. Oscar and Peggy moved to Marietta, Georgia, in 2013 to be closer to their family.

Oscar is survived by his wife of over 68 years, Peggy, his daughter, Katherine Phyllis Price McMahon (Don), of Kennesaw, Georgia, his daughter-in-law, Sandy Frost Price, seven grandchildren, and seven (soon to be eight) great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and both of his sons, Thomas Holland Price and Scott Gibson Price. Donations in Colonel Price’s memory can be made to Christ Episcopal Church, Kennesaw, or to Habitat for Humanity.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 18th, at Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 19th, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Kennesaw with burial at White Chapel Cemetery in Duluth at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19th.
