Obituary for Charles Thomas Wahlquist

Charles (Charlie) Wahlquist, Sr., 71, of Acworth, Ga., passed away Wed., May 9, 2018. He was born and raised in Memphis, Tenn. Charlie served his country proudly as a member of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was fascinated with aviation and became a navigator of the C-130 aircraft. Following his service, Charlie went on to work for the Civil Air Patrol and, later, as an electronics technician and software engineer until his retirement. His other passions included gardening and music. He especially loved the sound of the organ and enjoyed listening to The Animals, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, and Pink Floyd. Charlie also loved animals and was known to bring home strays and nurse them back to health. He was a loving father, known for publicly doting on his children, and a faithful husband. Charlie will forever be missed. He is survived by brothers Buddy Wahlquist, of Tex., and Ernest Byrd, of Miss.; his wife of 34 years, Rachelle Wahlquist; sons Charles Wahlquist, Jr. and Robert Wahlquist, of Al.; daughter Pamela Thrailkill, of Savannah; daughter Tabatha Martin, of Kennesaw; daughters Terri Wahlquist and Traci Wahlquist, of Marietta; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by parents Joseph Wahlquist and Mary Alice Byrd, sisters Jo Alice Wahlquist and Nella Mae Rondeau, and brother George Wahlquist. A committal service will be held 1 p.m. Wed., May 23, at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. Guests should arrive 30 minutes before the service. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
