Obituary for Devan Garrett Brunson

Devan was born on December 17th, 1992 at Lane Memorial Hospital in Zachary, Louisiana. Devan played little league baseball and participated in the World Series competition when he was 12 years old in Cooperstown, New York. He attended Kennesaw Mountain High School in 2008-2011. While there Devan played baseball, football and rugby and during his senior year his team won state for rugby. They later went onto the Southeastern Super Regionals in Florida for rugby. After graduation he attended Kennesaw State University prior to joining the United States Navy.

From the time that Devan’s nephews Aiden and Jaxson where born he had an instant special and close bond with them. Devan was a father figure for his two young nephews and frequently attended there school functions, sporting events and taught them many outdoor fun activities. Devan taught them how to ride their bikes and tie their shoes, he also attended their first day of school and frequently had lunch with them at school.

Devan enlisted as a Petty Officer in the United States Navy on February 11th, 2013, and reported to Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois. After basic training, he reported to Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC), Pensacola, Florida where he spent the next four months in Air Traffic Control (AC) “A” school. He graduated on December 13th, 2013 and then reported to Naval Base Coronado in January 2014.

While stationed at Naval Base Coronado, California, Air Traffic Control Division, ACAN Brunson excelled professionally and was promoted to Third Class Petty Officer. Devan qualified as Ground Controller, Flight Planning Dispatcher, and Clearance Delivery. He was designated by his commanding officer as Flight Planning Supervisor and his motivation and work ethic earned him the selection as Naval Base Coronado Junior Sailor of the Year, 2014. Petty Officer Brunson was promoted to Second Class Petty Officer in 2016.

Devan “AC2 Brunson” transferred to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland in January 2017. His dedication and professional study were both key in him rapidly qualifying through an intense training syllabus. He is what we call an “Air Traffic Controller (ATC) rockstar”. He was designated by his commanding officer as a Flight Planning and Tower Supervisor in less than ten months and was nominated for Junior Sailor of the Quarter for 1st of 2018.

Devan “AC2 Brunson” spent his leisure time swimming and golfing. He was a caring shipmate who loved baseball and was a fan of the LSU Tigers and the Atlanta Braves. He volunteered more than 100 hours towards Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and coaching little league baseball.
