Obituary for Elizabeth W. Trest

On the afternoon of Thursday, January 24, 2019, and after a very short but acute illness, Elizabeth Wilde “Libby” Trest passed from this world into the loving arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she has loved and served for over five decades. Libby’s magnetic personality, love for others and heart for service has drawn countless families to consider her “a true part of our family.” There are few people in life about which no-one speaks despairingly. Libby was one of those few. She has been daughter, sister and surrogate mother and grandmother to many…and true friend to all fortunate enough to know her. Some came to know Christ through her active witness. Others grew in Christ because of her life lived before them. Everyone knew that there was a definable difference in the way she loved and lived life. She spent her entire professional life serving other’s spiritual, emotional and physical needs. Early in her career she served in Christian Missionary organizations, Campus Crusade for Christ (now CRU), and Worldwide Discipleship Association. Her principal mission field was high school and college students where through her life and her words she allowed God to change the trajectory of hundreds blessed to be in her ministry. After earning her counseling degree from Georgia State University, she continued her ministry with a number of professional counseling practices in the Atlanta area. Libby not only gave of her vast talents to others, she also invested her resources significantly in numerous Christian ministries. In addition to being an outspoken yet sensitive Christian witness throughout her life…even to her last day…she was well read and conversant on a number of diverse topics, including sports and politics. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and participated in a number of fan clinics hosted by the Braves.
Libby was preceded in death by; her father, and WWII veteran, Colon Oliphant Trest, her mother Elizabeth Hunter Wilde Trest and her sister Marion Lee Trest Hardwick. She is survived by her sister, Suellen Trest Verger and her husband Paul. Libby is a 1962 graduate of Palmetto High School in Miami, Florida. She earned Bachelor of Science Degrees in both Home Economics & Elementary Education in 1967 from Louisiana State University where she was a member of PhiPi sorority, and a Masters in Education from Georgia State University in 1981. A celebration of Libby’s life and service will be from 3:00 - 4:00 PM on Wednesday January 30, 2019 at Carmichael’s Funeral Home, 2950 King St. SE, Smyrna, GA 30080.
