William Hubert Black, age 89, of Smyrna, Georgia passed away Saturday, April 15, 2017. Funeral services will be held 11 am Tuesday, April 18 in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Smyrna with Dr. Jeff Pennington and Rev. Phil Miller officiating. Interment will be in Sunrise Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
A native of Georgia, Mr. Black graduated from Bethesda High School in Gwinnett County and then went to serve his country as a Sergeant Major in the US Air Force 116th Fighter-Bomber Wing during the Korean War. Upon his return from Japan he obtained a Bachelors of Business Administration degree in 1958 from Georgia State College. Hubert and Jean Black moved to Cobb County in 1960. Mr. Black was involved with his church and community and has received numerous, highly esteemed awards for his service. Among the organizations he was involved in were the Jaycees, Civitans, Rotary and he also served as the President of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Black also served as a Councilman for the City of Smyrna from 1970 to 1971. Mr. Black’s service to his church was highlighted as a Deacon at First Baptist Church of Smyrna and as a Trustee at King Spring Baptist Church. His service to the church included over 40 years as a teacher in Bible studies and Sunday School classes.
Mr. Black was an avid gardener at home and a successful businessman within his community. Mr. Black worked in the insurance industry for over 50 years having started in the mailroom and working his way up to the President of the Stone Mountain Insurance Company. Hubert is survived by his wife of 66 years Elizabeth Jean Black and their two children Teresa Deas and Bill Black. He is also survived by his three siblings Howell Black, George Black and Evelyn Johnson. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Monday, April 17 at the Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna. Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna is in charge of arrangements.
