Obituary for Stanley Leonard Herndon

Stanley Leonard Herndon, son of the late Claude E. Herndon and Kathleen Reynolds Herndon, died peacefully in the arms of his family on Sunday, August 6, 2017, at 74 years old. He was born in Atlanta on November 12, 1942. Funeral services will be held at the Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Buckner officiating. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. A private burial at Kennesaw Memorial Park will be held following the service. Stan married Patricia Rainwater Herndon on September 20, 1969. A longtime employee of Lockheed Martin, Stan was an early entrant into the field of information technology, and rose from Lockheed's first class of programmers to information technology manager. As a graduate of Georgia State University and Woodrow Wilson College of Law, he and Pat were able to experience a number of overseas assignments, including several treasured years in Portugal. Their son, Michael, was born in 1981. After fatherhood, Stan volunteered as a soccer coach and with the Boy Scouts, where he inspired many young men. Throughout his life, Stan was an avid learner, and was rarely found without a book in his hand. Following his retirement in 2002, Stan was able to devote more time to his passions, including researching the Civil War, engaging with local investment clubs, and traveling with his wife. Like his mother, he had a green thumb, and grew sunflowers, tomatoes, and peppers for family and friends in his backyard garden.
After suffering a stroke in 2014, Stan's mobility was limited, but his wit and intelligence shined on, and his sense of humor remained. Stan was a member of Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta for many years, where he participated in several mission trips and volunteer activities.
Stan is survived by his wife and son, and five brothers and sisters: Claudia Herndon Etheridge of Baltimore, MD, Robert Herndon and Annette Herndon of Marietta, David Herndon of Atlanta, and Holly Herndon Cochran of Durango, CO. He is also survived by his uncle, C.M. Herndon of Smyrna, mother-in-law, Ruth M. Rainwater of Marietta, and seven nieces and nephews.
As a loving husband, inspirational father, and faithful friend, Stan will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish make contributions to the American Stroke Association.
