Obituary for Sam R. Whitfield

Sam R. Whitfield, 88, of Marietta, died January 27, 2018. A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late James Grady and Mary Susan Hasty Whitfield. He was a graduate of Pickens County High School (1948) and the University of Georgia (1952) and served as an army tank commander in the Korean Conflict, achieving the rank of Captain. Moving to Smyrna in 1955, he soon became a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and as church treasurer for ten years. A charter member of the Smyrna Rotary Club, he served as its president in 1966, amassed over fifty years of perfect attendance, and was recognized as a member of the Arch Klumph Society for his philanthropic contributions. Rotary District 6900 of Georgia established the annual Sam R. Whitfield Award for Ethics in his honor in 2014. In 1966, he was one of the twelve founding directors of Security National Bank, later the Trust Company Bank of Cobb County, now part of SunTrust. He served three terms on the Cobb County School Board (1973-1984), including two years as chairman and for twelve years on the Cobb County DFACS Board, including ten as chairman. In 2014, the Cobb Chamber of Commerce named him Smyrna Citizen of the Year. Mr. Whitfield was also a distinguished Freemason, serving as Master of Nelms Lodge No. 33 in 1966, Worthy Grand Patron of the Georgia Order of the Eastern Star in 1971-72, and as Grand Treasurer of the Grand Lodge of Georgia for fourteen years (1987-2002), among other offices and honors.
Mr. Whitfield was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Grace Garren Whitfield; his second wife, Peggy Watson Sheppard Whitfield; and his brothers Tom and Fred. Survivors include his son, Bryan Whitfield of Macon; his daughter, Sally Creswell and her husband Bobby, of Dalton; two grandsons, Colter and Walker Creswell; his sister Florence Jackson of Darien; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, at Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna with the Rev. Snyder Turner officiating. Interment at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park will follow. Visitation will be held from 5 PM until 7 PM on Monday, January 29, at Carmichael Funeral Home, 2950 King Street, Smyrna, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Calvary Children’s Home, 430 Lost Mountain Road, Powder Springs, Georgia 30127.
