Mr. Milton Sims Earnest, age 90 of Smyrna, passed away Friday, March 10, 2017. A visitation/memorial service will be held 3 PM Sunday, March 12th at Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna. He was born to Marvin and Julia Irene Adkins Earnest in Atlanta on September 1, 1926. He was a graduate of Tech High, and after serving in the Navy during WWII, he graduated from UGA and earned his Master’s Degree from Emory University. Mr. Earnest began his career, which he loved, as a teacher at Sylvan Hills High School, later becoming counselor. He was principal at various schools in the Atlanta Public School System, retiring from Fowler Street Elementary. He married Katherine (Kay) Lay of Calhoun in 1950, who survives him, sons Russell (Patrice) and Martin (Pam) and granddaughters Alicia, who is studying in Norway and Emily who lives in Raleigh, NC. Also surviving are his cousin Tom Sorrells of Dothan, AL, brother-in-law Norman Smith of Lawrenceville, several nieces and nephews, in-laws of Calhoun and Texas and special friend, Luanne Hege and family of Outer Banks, NC. He was a longtime member of Gordon Street Baptist Church and enjoyed membership in the East Point Elks Club. Milton enjoyed cooking, working crossword puzzles, his granddaughters and friends.
