Obituary for Mildred T. Bell

Mildred Thomas Bell died on August 3, 2018, 46 days shy of her 100th birthday. She was born September 15, 1918 to George H.A. and Mary Ella Thomas in Purcell, Oklahoma. She spent her childhood in Hapeville, Georgia and attended Russell High School. In 1940 she married Hoke Smith Bell and they celebrated 51 happy years together. She balanced raising a family with her work at National Theater Supply, United Way of Atlanta and the Hinman Dental Society. She enjoyed travel, collecting things such as vintage hats and keeping a daily journal. She was a child of God as an active member of Fellowship Baptist and First Baptist Churches of Smyrna for seven decades. Hers was a life of faith and love for all God’s children. But she also liked to have fun. A pastor once deemed her “Tinker Bell” because of her animated joy for life, a joy she shared with everyone she met. The nickname stuck. She preferred music that was allegro over largo and was known to honk the horn on her walker at those who moved too slowly.
She is survived by her two children, Julia Norton of Buchanan, GA and Russ Bell of Clancy, MT, her brother George Thomas of Powder Springs, GA and 5 grandchildren, Melissa Sykes, Malinda Bennett, Derek Bell, Adrienne Heun and Shannon Bell, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Phyllis Chapman, Evelyn Grimes and Wenonah Wells, brother Blythe Thomas and granddaughter Margie Smith Norton.
A viewing will be held Thursday, August 9 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Carmichael Funeral Home, 2950 King Street, Smyrna, GA. Her funeral will be there Friday, August 10 at 11 am followed by a reception at noon. Interment will be at 3pm at the City Cemetery in Carrollton, GA.
The family would like to thank the many friends and caregivers who took such good care of her over the years. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. Please visit to offer a condolence to the family or to share a memory of “Tinker Bell.”
