Obituary for Mary Nell Batchelor

Batchelor, Mary Nell
Mary Nell Snuggs Batchelor died peacefully, surrounded by family, on May 31, 2018 at Presbyterian Village, Austell, GA. She was 89.

The only child of Florence Eleanor (Nell) Lakeman Snuggs and Charley Hiram Snuggs, Mary Nell spent most of her childhood in Haleyville, Alabama. She attended Alabama College for Women in Montevallo, Alabama for two years then she married her high school sweetheart, Horace Lamar Batchelor. After Horace’s four-year state-side tour in the U.S. Air Force, a job for her husband at Lockheed Aircraft took the young couple to Smyrna, Georgia in 1955. This became their new home where the couple raised their three boys and one girl.

Mary Nell lived her life with joy and appreciation. She was a long-time member (63 years) of Smyrna First United Methodist Church. Unless they were traveling, Mary Nell and Horace could always be found at church on Sunday mornings as well as taking part in the activities during the weekdays. Both often served as leaders in their Sunday School classes and worked on innumerable church committees and boards.
Mary Nell was a high-integrity bookkeeper at Wills High School 1968 to 1987. She will be remembered as a reliable, kind and caring friend and neighbor. Her clever sense of humor was one of her most endearing qualities. Mary Nell was a devoted daughter, loving mother and an attentive grandmother.

Mary Nell’s greatest joy, and where she was extraordinarily talented, was her role as a wife and mother. She served 10 years as a Cub Scout Den Mother for her sons and as a Girl Scout volunteer for her daughter. But more telling is how Mary Nell was that smiling “neat Mom” in the neighborhood who was obviously delighted to have kids in the yard. Mary Nell and Horace were never happier than when they hosted their children's friends on their modest houseboat on Lake Lanier and later, at the lake house in Alabama. She was the happiest with her large family around her. She thoroughly enjoyed her 53-year marriage, making Horace’s death in 2003 more than unfortunate.

With ever-growing appreciation and respect, Mary Nell’s four children remember their mother coping with the dramas and challenges of life with a comfortable confidence. A home cooked meal was never missed; a real need was never not met.
She held her faith in God, her family, friends and community easily. No matter the academic, career or personal struggles, despite any and all illnesses and accidents, her husband and children knew they could rely on Mary Nell’s kindness, competence, and caring.
She is survived by her daughter Linda (Tom) Porter, of Austell, GA; sons Charles (Mary Anne) Batchelor, of Wintergreen, VA, Joe (Shelley) Batchelor, of Cedar Bluff, AL, and Ed (Claire) Batchelor of LaGrange, GA; grandchildren, Jennifer (Porter) Hall and Allen Porter, Christy Batchelor, Haley (Batchelor) Maycock and John Reed Batchelor; five great-grandchildren, plus one on the way, and a host of cousins, nephews and nieces.

Those who wish, may make contributions in lieu of flowers, to Smyrna First United Methodist Church, 1315 Concord Road, Smyrna, GA 30080. Saturday, June 2nd her family will receive friends 10:00 AM at the church, funeral service to follow at 11:00 with Rev. James Mitchell and Rev. Joey Hatchell officiating. Interment will be in Cheatham Hill Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements by Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna. carmichaelfuneralhomes.com
