Obituary for Kevin Joseph McNeight

Kevin Joseph McNeight went into the presence of the Lord March 10, 2018. He was born in Marshfield, Wisconsin August 20, 1958, the sixth and last child to his late parents, Allison & Adella McNeight. He is predeceased by infant twin sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy McNeight; his daughter, Shannon Lundberg (Matt), of Colorado Springs; stepdaughter, Kimberly Allen, Hattiesburg, MS; one granddaughter, London Lundberg. Shannon is due to deliver Kevin’s second grandchild October 11th. Additional survivors include sisters, Gloria Blake and Pat Heidrich, and brother, Richard McNeight (Teresa). He has numerous nieces and nephews, including Sharon Raines (Densel), Lynnae Ehley (Glenn), Lisa Kresl (Jim), Jeffrey Heidrich (Mary), David Blake (Renee), Dr. Angela McNeight, Andrew McNeight, Michelle McNeight. In addition to his wife and family, Kevin was also beloved by all of Cindy’s family.
Growing up in Stratford, Wisconsin, Kevin dreamed of being an airline pilot at the age of 4 years. He excelled academically his entire life and earned the Eagle Scout honor and was also Salutatorian of his high school graduating class. He then earned an appointment to both the US Air Force Academy (as well as the US Naval Academy). Upon graduation from the Air Force Academy in 1980, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and also earned a pilot slot. He continued a distinguished military career for 30 years combined active duty and reserve service to the country he dearly loved. Kevin flew the C-130 his entire military career serving as an instructor pilot, evaluator pilot and eventually served as Squadron Commander, 700th Airlift Squadron, Dobbins ARB, Georgia. Kevin retired as a Colonel from the Air Force Reserves in 2010.
Kevin realized his childhood dream in his civilian capacity as a pilot for Delta Air Lines where he was hired October 14, 1988. He was proud to have flown as a Captain on both the B727 and Md-88 aircraft. He also served Delta as a B727 Senior Second Officer Instructor, FAA Aircrew Program Designated Examiner, and Program Manager of Delta Fuel Conservation Program. In total, Kevin flew more than 10,000 hours combined military and civilian flying hours.
Kevin and Cindy had a common passion for aviation and he mentored her from her private pilot’s license to helping her also realize her childhood dream of flying as an airline pilot. He was instrumental every step of the way which culminated when he attended her wing ceremony at United Airlines, June, 2015 (days before his diagnosis of metastatic uveal melanoma).
Kevin was an avid runner his entire life, running 6 miles a day until very recently, in spite of his disease. He was also a passionate water skier and accomplished snow skier, as well.
He also had a deep passion for making sure children had toys at Christmas. He volunteered to “adopt” families in need at Cathedral of Christ the King and also “adopted” the wish lists of numerous children in Foster care in the state of Georgia through the Clark’s Kids Charity every December for the past decade.
Kevin’s recent and final Eagle Scout honorary merit badge, the “Fingerprinting Merit Badge”, thanked Kevin for leaving his ‘fingerprint on so many lives in his role as a leader, a serviceman, a pilot, a family member and a friend’. His fingerprint will never fade from our lives.
Kevin now resides in Glory with His Heavenly Father, and also certainly, with his beloved dog, Sparky (who predeceased Kevin in November).
Kevin’s Celebration of Life Service is 10 AM, Monday, March 19th, Cathedral of Christ the King, Atlanta, GA. There is a luncheon reception immediately following, at the Delta Flight Museum, adjacent to Delta Headquarters, Atlanta, GA. He will be buried at a later date, with full military honors, at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
