Obituary for James Robert Dunton

James Robert Dunton of Smyrna, GA, passed away Oct. 7, 2017 surrounded by family and friends, after a long and difficult battle with lung disease. He was 67. Robert will be remembered as a steadfast husband of 39 years to his beloved wife, Nanci, as a loyal and supportive brother to three loving sisters and his many nieces, nephews and other family members, and as a lifelong and true friend to many, including three brothers-in-law who all thought of him as their “other brother from a different mother.” He will be sorely missed by all. A lifetime resident of Smyrna, Robert was known as a true southern gentleman, fair and generous with all who knew or met him, regardless of race, creed or color. Robert made everyone feel welcome. He was also instinctively and effortlessly funny, unfailingly down-to-earth and quick with the kind of joke or witty comment that could cut through any tense atmosphere or pretentious chatter. With a few choice words, he could leave a roomful of people laughing and smiling. Besides his beloved wife and family, Robert loved southern rock, especially the Allman Bros. He loved auto racing and cars, and was responsible for keeping more than one car on the road for family members and friends. And, in particular, he loved Boris, his pet weimaraner and “couch buddy.” Robert is survived by his loyal, steadfast and loving wife, Nanci, by three sisters – Earline Pettet, Judy Griffith and Joan Dunton – by a sister-in-law, Ellen Dunton, by three brothers-in-law, Jim, Mike and Gary Frederick, and by numerous nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe. In remembrance, a visitation will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Carmichael Funeral Home, 2950 King St. in Smyrna. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Robert are requested to either Georgia Transplant Foundation, gatransplant.org, or Atlanta Weimaraner Club Rescue, atlantalovesweims.org.
