Obituary for James Fontaine Crist

James (Jim) Fontaine Crist, Jr. was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1935 to Elizabeth Courtney Boykin and James F. Crist, Sr., and died October 6, 2017. Jim attended Baylor Military Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee and the University of Alabama where he received his college degree (B.S.), having majored in business and finance with graduate work in law school. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and was active in the U.S. Naval Reserves throughout his college days.After college he served in the Navy having graduated from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He served four years at sea in the Navy as a commissioned officer. He served as a NATO Liaison Officer for the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea and Europe during 1958 and 1961. He remained active in the Naval Reserves for 14 years, ultimately achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander.In 1962, he returned to Atlanta as an Executive Staff Consultant with Georgia Power Company dealing in land acquisition. During this period he attended Georgia State University taking graduate courses in Real Estate Financing, Management, and Budgeting. He was a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Real Estate; a Senior Member of the International Organization of Real Estate Appraisers; and was a Certified Senior Appraiser in the National Association of Certified Real Property Appraisers. He was also a Senior Member of the Environmental Assessment Association of America with a designation of Certified Environmental Inspector. Jim Crist was a Real Estate Broker and commercial developer for the past fifty years.In 1964 he formed his own company of real estate consultants specializing in land development and financing of commercial properties. Some of his company’s larger accounts included CSX Railroad, Holiday Inns of America, The Meade Corporation, Days Inns of Inc., Steak and Ale, and Georgia Power Company.He has served on the Board of Directors of several local development companies. For a period of ten years he was President and Owner of Southeast Property Consultants, Inc., prior to merging this company into his own company, James F. Crist Associates, Inc. In 1988, Mr. Crist formed this company to serve as consultant for all phases of real estate financing. This company specialized in investment, development, and consulting services for investment real estate ventures requiring federal, state, and local environmental permitting and regulations.Jim Crist’s civic activities include work with the Atlanta United Appeal Campaign, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Heart Fund, and March of Dimes, he was also a board member of the Atlanta Jaycees. He was a founding member of Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church where he served three terms as Junior and Senior Warden. He was Director of Development of Saint Anne’s Terrace Inc. He was formerly a member of the Saint Cecelia Society of Charleston, South Carolina, and formerly a member of the Capital City Club of Atlanta.Jim lived most of his life in his lake homes which he developed and stocked with various kinds of fish. An avid angler himself, his great joy was having friends and family over to fish. Mr. Crist took delight in time spent outdoors and hunting.Jim had a strong faith in God and was a practicing spiritual being. His ability to forgive and love was remarkable, as was his warm sense of humor. He was endowed with integrity, ambition, an outgoing personality, and a desire to help others. He loved to tell a good joke or story.Jim comes from an “old line Atlanta family” highly regarded in the business and social community. His father, James F. Crist, Sr., was CEO of the Southern Company. He was preceded in death by his parents, James F. Crist, Sr. and Elizabeth Boykin Crist; loving brother, George (Bill) William Crist, III; and grandson Andrew Crist Malone. He is survived by his wife, Jean Daniel Crist; two daughters, Elizabeth Rodgers (Lance) and Fontaine Young (Paul); step daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) Sawyer Ford; sister, Elizabeth (Betsy) Crist Candler; sister-in-law, Susan Graddy Crist; 5 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, and numerous nieces and nephews. Private services will be held at a later date. Mr. Crist will be buried in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
