Obituary for Helen B. Robertson

Atlanta native and long-time East Point and Smyrna resident Helen Baumgartner Robertson died peacefully on Saturday, December 30. The youngest daughter of Mary and Frank Baumgartner, Helen was born on March 15, 1926, as the seventh of eight children. She graduated from Commercial High School in Atlanta and was a member of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and St. Anthony Catholic churches. She later became an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hapeville, Georgia, and most recently attended St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Smyrna, Georgia.
After graduating from high school, Helen began her career working in banking until she married Wayne Miller Robertson of East Point, Georgia, and began her family. She and Wayne raised four children in East Point, where she was an active member of the elementary and high school PTA, Band Parent Organizations, and a Girl Scout volunteer.
Helen returned to the work force as a secretary for various businesses, but her favorite job was working for Morale Support at Ft. McPherson. Here she was able to help the military and their families, and her sweet spirit and kind heart were well-suited to this job. After her retirement in 1993, she and Wayne used their time to travel, and she continued volunteering for St. Vincent DePaul Society, serving as Eucharistic Minister, and enjoying family, especially their two grandsons.
Throughout her life, Helen always had an open heart, open arms, and a welcoming home. Those who knew her will miss her kindness, her loving spirit, her warmth, and her unwavering faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne and is survived by daughters Barbara Robertson and Karen Robertson, daughter and son-in-law Janet and Sam Harvey, son and daughter-in-law Michael and Norma Robertson, grandsons Stephen Robertson and Matthew Robertson, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 5, beginning at 6PM at Carmichael’s Funeral Home in Smyrna, with Rosary beginning at 7:30PM in the chapel. A funeral Mass is planned for Saturday, January 6, at 11AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Smyrna. The family will host a reception after the Mass at the home of Janet and Sam Harvey.
