Obituary for Fred M. Shope

Mr. Fred Monroe Shope, Sr, age 98 of Smyrna, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 11, 2017. Fred was born July 19, 1918 in Gordon County, GA, and was the son of William Alan Shope (Pop) and Effie Lu Pass. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Alice Sue Martin Shope, as well as three brothers – Emmett, Burdette, and Bill. Fred is survived by his four children – Penny Wyllie, Sherry Johnson, Jana Overstreet, and Fred Jr. He was also a proud grandfather of nine grandchildren and great grandfather of nine great grandchildren. Fred served in the US Navy in the 1940’s aboard the USS Hanson. He was a proud Navy Veteran. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Smyrna and a longtime resident of Smyrna for over 70 years. Fred’s professional career began in the automobile parts industry in Chattanooga, TN and spanned five decades, culminating in Fred running his own business, Automotive Factory Warehouse, in Atlanta, GA. Sue and Fred enjoyed traveling and journeyed to many worldwide destinations including Europe and the Holy Land. After retiring, Fred became an avid golfer and managed to play with friends a few times a week. He also enjoyed spending time with his family taking vacations, playing games, and simply being just the greatest dad/granddad (“Gramps”) in the world. Visitation will be held Friday, June 16 from 11 am – 1 pm at Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna, GA. Service to immediately follow in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Smyrna. Interment will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna is in charge of arrangements.
