Obituary for Doris Cantrell

Doris Adeline (Weatherford) Cantrell, a long time resident of West Cobb died at the age of 92 on April 10, 2018.
Doris Cantrell was a loving, intelligent and strong lady who was loved by many people and who loved many people in return. At any time, she could have been found chasing after one of her two sons or one or all of her three granddaughters, coaxing a new rose bush or hydrangea, working with her husband in the store or planning a trip to somewhere new on the travel list of places to see and explore.
She was born to Allen Benjamin Weatherford and Nancy Elizabeth Warren on November 2, 1925 in Hall county Georgia. At an early age, her family moved to Cobb county where she attended McEachern High School and where she met her future husband, Raymond Franklin Cantrell. She played basketball even though she stood barely over five feet tall and graduated as Valedictorian of her class. Raymond was always quick to state that Doris was smarter than him. Doris and Raymond were Mr. and Miss McEachern of 1943. World War II saw Raymond enlist in the Marines and Doris, turning down a college scholarship, moved to Atlanta, working as a secretary for the military. Raymond served on Guadalcanal, Okinawa and at the Japanese surrender to the United States in China and with the help of many prayers returned home. They were married on Christmas Day, 1946.
The ensuing years saw Doris working along side Raymond developing the family business, a grocery store and service station that became a fixture in West Cobb. Sons were born soon and then, with time grandchildren. That stage of life was filled with work but mixed with trips with the granddaughters to petting zoos, the mountains, Orlando, especially Sea World, birthday parties and motorcycle races. After their retirement in the 1980’s, there was less work, more rest and lots of short and long trips in one of many campers. They were married for over 63 years.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Franklin Cantrell and granddaughter Kelly Malissa Cantrell Weiser.
Doris is survived by her son Dr David M. Cantrell and his wife, Claudia Cantrell of Kennesaw; son, Anthony Raymond Cantrell (Tony) of Marietta; granddaughters Katie Angaline Cantrell of Kennesaw, Leah Elizabeth Cantrell Renner and her husband, Rickey Renner; great grandson Maverick Lawson Reimer, all of Plant City, Florida and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, April 12, 2018 in the Chapel of Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta with Rev. Dallas White officiating. Burial will be in Cheatham Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 PM before the service at the Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta. (770)424-4924, www.carmichaelcares.com
