Obituary for Daniel Franklin Smith

On August 2, 2017 our world lost a gregarious, loving, generous man who was a teacher to many, and a cherished husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Daniel Franklin Smith, (Danny, Dan, Dan-o) was born December 9th, 1933 in Watertown, South Dakota. Dan was the ninth of ten children of Cecil Kinsman Smith and Thomas Smith. He grew up poor in a loving extended family and lived with many relatives in his young life. This fostered in him a welcoming joy in giving shelter to any in need.

In his early years Dan helped on family farms milking cows and herding them on horseback. Later he worked with his oldest brother Wesley on the rural electrification of South Dakota. Dan taught in schools for 47 years from 1957 to 2004. In his first school he was also the janitor, shoveling coal into the school’s furnace before dawn. He held weekend and summer jobs selling encyclopedias, digging ditches for sewer lines, working in a lumber yard and roofing homes – anything to supplement his teaching salary.

In 1982 Dan married his wonderful Sue. They taught together at Etowah High School and Dan became a co-enthusiast for FFA, school sports, and the school’s greenhouse. He was honored to be awarded a State FFA degree by the Georgia Future Farmers of America. Sue and Dan traveled the USA to visit scores of friends and relatives, and in the weeks before his death, Dan and Sue visited their 100th country.

Dan is preceded in death by his parents, eight of his nine siblings, and first wife, Sue Lunbeck Smith. Grieving the loss of his gentle presence are his loving wife Susan Richie Smith, daughter Kim Smith Papastavridis, granddaughter Julia Papastavridis, brother Robert Smith, and 250 nieces, nephews, grand- and great grand- nieces and nephews. Many more are considered family, and thousands of students remember him.

Not nostalgic in the least, Dan was always looking ahead to his next get-together, his next adventure. May he play many winning hands in his cruise ship card game in the sky!

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at Heritage Presbyterian Church on Sunday August 13, 2017 at 2:00pm in the sanctuary. A gathering of friends and family will be held immediately after the service in the Mission and Ministry Building.
